Endangered turtles, extensive plantations and the epic mount Bromo

Spot turtles with a ranger at the Sukamade turtle beach in the Meru Betiri National Park, before heading to the coffee, cacao and rubber plantations in Kalibaru. You can see how the crops are grown and how the harvest is processed into a product. The epic mount Bromo and the ancient caldera is a one of a life time experience. This moonlike landscape is one of a kind.

Day 1: Meet the turtles at Sukamade beach

Early morning pick up at your hotel or at the airport in Bali. You will drive straight to Gilimanuk to catch the ferry to Ketapang in Java. The cross over takes about 1 hour. You will arrive around noon.
Then, after a nice lunch you continue to Jajag village where you will change cars. By Jeep you drive in around 3 to 4 hours to Meru Betiri National Park. If you arrive early enough you can see local production of gula Jawa, brown sugar. Otherwise, you can have dinner and a short rest. A ranger will guide you to Sukamade beach. Female turtles come ashore during the evening and leave the beach around midnight.

Day 2: Releasing baby turtles

First thing in the morning is to get back to the beach to release baby turtles into the Indian Ocean. The eggs laid on the beach are transferred to the hatchery. Anytime when turtle eggs hatch, the baby turtles are released. You get to be so lucky to see them disappear into their new lives.
Hereafter you will go back to the guest house for breakfast. Then, check out and hop on your Jeep. You will be heading to Kalibaru. Famous for its plantations where rubber, cocao and coffee are grown.

Day 3: Discover the Glennmore plantations; coffee, rubber & cacao

After breakfast you will drive to Glennmore. The small plantation offers all insights. Rubber, cacao and coffee are grown at Glennmore. Harvesting these crops is also an interesting process as is the processing of these cash crops. You can see the work in the field as well in the factories.
Then it is a few hours drive to the Bromo area. If you arrive before sunset you can discover Hindu life in the Bromo area and choose your spot to see the sunset.

Discovery ideas: Local life in the Hindu Tengger area, maybe a wedding, the local market or one of the many ceremonies performed by Hindu people.

Day 4: Bromo sunrise tour

Early morning. At 03:00 your local Jeep is waiting for you. You depart to mount Pananjakan at an height of 2,770, one of the heighest viewpoints in the area. It offers stunning morning views, with or without sunrise as long as it isn't raining or too foggy.
You might need a warming cup of coffee or tea when you arrive. A local warung offers a good atmosphere and an early morning snack for the food lovers, as actually all Indonesians are. Temperatures early morning vary between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius. Be prepared. Wear some warm clothes.
When the sun is about to rise, walk the last few meters to the actual viewpoint. Choose your spot. Sunrise over the caldera can be stunning. Weather conditions determine your color palet. Take your time to enjoy.
When you feel a bit warm, you can get back to your Jeep and continue your journey. Next is the black Sea of Sand that seperates you from active volcano Bromo. Get a walk if you feel up to it.
The car will park near Luhur Poten temple. Then it is a 45 minutes walk to the top of mount Bromo. Keep on looking over your shoulders to see the views changing. Bromo's surreal beauty should be analyzed carefully.
Once satisfied, you will be driven back to your hotel. You can have a refreshing shower and breakfast before checking out.
