Bromo's surreal landscape & Ijen's most acidic lake on earth

Bromo is one of Indonesia's most breathtaking sights. Ijen is home to the most acidic lake on earth...
An ancient caldera, a moonlike landscape with a black colored Sand Sea and a wonderfully green colored - or goldish at the end of the dry season - savanna. The biggest blue fire area in the world is at the turquoise Ijen crater lake.

Day 1: Bromo sunrise tour

Midnight will be your departure time. We will pick you up anywhere in Malang.
Sunrise is about 5 o'clock in the morning. In 2 to 3 hours you will reach Cemara Lawang village. Change cars - hop on a local Jeep - and drive in another tiny hour to Pananjakan.
At Pananjakan you will have some time to get used to the local temperature. It will be between 0º and 10º Celsius. Put on your jacket, your scarf and maybe your cap and gloves.
A hot cup of coffee or tea and a warm local snack will help you to balance your body temperature before sunrise.
From the local small restaurant to the viewpoint is a 2 minutes walk only. Choose your spot and wait for the landscape to change. Sunrise at Mt. Pananjakan.

Breakfast will be served in picnic style in the stunning black Sea of Sand. You will cross it after the sunrise. The car parks a 45 min walk away from Bromo's top. Don't forget to look back once in a while. Views keep on changing with the rising sun...
Once back at the car, your Jeep-driver will escort you to Cemara Lawang. Change cars, back to the more comfortable one.
It will take about 6 hours to arrive in Bondowoso city. You will spend the night in a convenient hotel.

Discovery ideas: if you aren't too tired, you could visit the Madakaripura waterfalls. Keep in mind that the coming night will be short as well.

Day 2: Ijen crater lake tour

Another early wake-up call. You will depart around midnight if you are interested in Ijen's blue fire. If not, you will depart around 04:00. You will need about 2 hours to reach Paltuding. Paltuding is the basecamp from where your hike to Ijen crater lake starts. It is a strenuous walk uphill to the crater laker. 1.5 hour sweating to conquer the 3 km to the green-blueish lake. Meet the sulfur miners carying heavy sulfur loads out of Ijen's crater and then rolling their loads down the slope. Walk around at the top, experience the lake from different sights.
When back at the parking area don't forget to visit the sulfur weighing area. All sulfur miners get together to weigh their loads and to get paid.
After a small local snack, you will be driven to Ketapang harbour where you can take the ferry to Bali. En route you can visit Kalibendo coffee plantation and Jagir waterfall.

Discovery ideas: Ijen houses the biggest blue fire area in the world. Don't mistake blue fire for lava. Blue fire is actually the light from burning of sulfuric gases. Heading down into the crater of this active volcano is at your own risk.
