East Java's natural wonders: volcanoes Bromo and Ijen & endangered turtles

The natural wonders of East Java. Mt. Bromo's last eruption was in 2010 after which the area definitely looks differently. Feel yourself standing at the active volcano while enjoying the unearthly surroundings. Ijen Crater Lake is the most acidic lake on earth with wonderful colors, while sulfur miners are working hard to earn their daily rice.

Day 1: Malang - Bromo sunrise tour - Ijen Plateau

You will be picked up at midnight. In about 3 hours you will drive to Cemara Lawang village.
Then you will change to a 4wd Jeep, local transport. The Jeep will bring you in about 40 min to Pananjakan.
Pananjakan stands tall with 2770 m. Have a warming break. Drink a cup of coffee or tea and taste some local snacks.
Then choose your spot at the actual viewpoint. Wait. The sun will rise. Colors exposing in great varieties.
After sunrise you can walk back to your Jeep. Your driver will be waiting for you.
Head down into the caldera. Cross the black volcanic Sea of Sand.
Your Jeep will park near Luhur Poten temple. Then it is a 45 min walk one way to the crater rim of active volcano Bromo.
Take your time at this superb and enchanting environment. This moonlike landscape is certainly a surreal beauty.
Once back at your Jeep, you will head back to Cemara Lawang. Have breakfast in Cafe Lava Hotel.
Then head to Bondowoso city via Arak-Arak hill. Have lunch (not included) at one of the viewpoints at the winding road.

Day 2: Ijen Crater Lake & Sukamade turtle beach

Another early morning. Your driver is ready at 04:00. It will take about 2 hours to reach Paltuding.
From Paltuding it is a 1.5 hours walk to Ijen crater lake. Meet the sulphur miners.
The sulphur miners collect their loads in Ijen's crater. Liquid sulphur quickly solidifies when it get in contact with air. The sulphur miners chop the sulphur in manageable pieces. These are loaded in bamboo baskets to be carried out of the crater. These loads can way up to 100 kg. On top the miners reload the sulphur on trolleys to wheel it down to the sulphur weighing area.
When you discovered the area, you can meet your driver at the parking area. Have a small welcoming coffee break. Then continue to Meru Betiri National Park.

In Banyuwangi you will have to change cars. A 4wd Jeep will bring you to Meru Betiri National Park in approximately 3 hours.
At Sukamade you have time to explore the area, the village and to see how brown sugar is being made.
Around 19:00 the ranger will pick you up. He will guide you to the beach. Wait for the turtles to come ashore. There isn't a guarantee that the turtles will come ashore, your chances are about 95%. The turtles will lay they eggs and return around midnight to the sea. The rangers will collect the eggs, and bring them to the hatchery as part of the turtle protection plan.
It will be midnight when you return to the homestay.

Day 3: Releasing baby turtles

When some eggs have hatched, you will be the lucky bird to release some of the baby turtles. You will bring them from the hatchery to the beach. You can release them on the beach and see them disappear into the sea.
Have breakfast before checking out. You will be dropped in Ketapang harbour.
