Java's soul Yogyakarta, glorius Bromo & heroic Ijen

Yogyakarta is Indonesia's second largest tourist destination, after Bali. Despite that, it isn't that crowded as it is a city with many valuable spots. After you got to know Yogya, you will head by first class train to Malang. Have breakfast before heading to the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru national park. This area rich with Hindu culture has a lot to offer, besides Indonesia's icon mount Bromo. Visit heroic Ijen before continuing to Bali.

Day 1: Visit the Borobudur and tour around Yogyakarta

Your car is ready. Head to the Borobudur after your breakfast. In approximately one hour your will reach this colossal Buddhist monument. Surrounded by grass green meadows, rice fields and palms the temple is inviting in many ways. Your driver will be waiting at the parking lot.
Visiting Yogyakarta city is next. Depending on how much time is left, you can visit some sights according to your wishes. Take a look at the discovery ideas below to get an impression of the possibilities.
Get some rest in the evening and before hopping on the train. You can take a local Indonesian shower after the tour and before getting on the train.

Day 2: Enchanting Madakaripura waterfalls & Hindu village life

The Bima train to Malang departs at 00:52. Your first class seat guarantees some rest, but the chairs can't be moved. Bring some snacks as the choice on the train is limited. You will arrive at 08:15.
By becak you will be driven to the rooftop cafe of Kampong Tourist to have breakfast. After breakfast and maybe a refreshing shower, you will tour around Malang a bit; kampong Warna-Warni, also called Jodipan, Tugu monument, the alun-alun, the Chinese temple and the famous Ijen boulevard.
On your way to Cemara Lawang village near mount Bromo, you can visit the enchanting Madakaripura Waterfalls. These waterfalls are still actively used by local people during various ceremonies. On rainy days the waterfalls can't be visited as it is too dangerous.
Probably you will arrive in Cemara Lawang before it gets dark. Choose your spot to see the sunset over mount Bromo. If time is sufficient you can also explore the area with your driver.

Day 3: Bromo sunrise tour

Your ride is ready at 03:00. A 4wd Jeep will take you around the area of mount Bromo.
First you will go to mount Pananjakan. It is one of the highest view points in the area. Sunrises can be marvelous and a good view enhances the joy. It can be cold early morning, between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius. Be prepared and bring some warm clothes. After sunrise temperatures might also rise.
At certain dates - local holidays and weekends - this viewpoint can be crowded. We can discuss some alternatives.
Get back to your Jeep for the next adventure. You will be heading down into the black volcanic Sea of Sand. If you wish, you can start to walk or have a small break. The car will eventually park near Luhur Poten temple.
Then you will need about 45 minutes to walk to the top of mount Bromo. Mount Bromo is an active volcano and rose about 40,000 years ago into the ancient caldera. A caldera is a large volcanic crater, typically formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of the volcano (Source: Google dictionary, 1 Jan 2018).
Since Bromo is an active volcano, the site often changes. This makes it even more interesting. Keep on looking over your shoulders and explore the area by 360ยบ.
Once back at your Jeep, you will return to your hotel. Have your breakfast and a refreshing shower before checking out.
You will be heading to Bondowoso city. The road that takes you over the Arak-Arak hill, is winding and scenic. Have a lunch with a good view (not included).

Day 4: Ijen Crater Lake

Be ready around 04:00. Another early morning. It is a 2 hours drive to Paltuding. If it is too early discuss an alternative with your driver, but keep in mind that one should leave the Ijen crater lake before 14:00. In the afternoon smoke development increases. Therefore we suggest to leave around 04:00.
At Paltuding your hike to Ijen crater lake - or Kawah Ijen - starts. It takes over one hour to conquer the 3 km to the top. At certain points the slope is steep and exhausting.
You will meet sulphur miners descending with their lorries full with solidified yellow sulphur. Bring them some cigarettes, have some small talk, makes pictures, and buy some souvenirs. If you please.
The famous blue-green colored and most acidic lake on earth! It is there... Explore. Walk around. See the Dutch made dam to prevent the acidic water to spill into the rivers. Smell. See colours changing. Sulphur miners at work. Breathtakingly beautiful. 
When back at the parking area, one can visit the sulphur weighing area. All miners bring there sulphur to the weighing area. They get paid and load their sulphur on a truck. The truck then transports the sulphur to the sulphur purifying factory in Licin village. If time is sufficient, you can visit the factory in Licin.
After a coffee break your tour continues to the final destination; Ketapang harbour where the ferry to Bali departs.
